So, we thought this week, we would dedicate our factual Friday post to Pumpkin carving! 

Here's five some what factual, facts about pumpkin carving! 

1) Every October carved pumpkins appear throughout the doorsteps and windows of houses across America and the world - a sure sign of the halloween season. The practice of decorating “jack-o’-lanterns”—the name comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack—originated in Ireland.

2) The original “jack-o’-lanterns” were carved from potatoes, turnips or beets

3) According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him, then trapped him by surrounding him by crosses - but the story varies depending on who is telling it. 

4) Irish families began to put carved out turnips in their windows to prevent Stingy Jack and other ghouls from entering the home. 

5) Once the tradition hit the United States, Irish immigrants soon realized that the pumpkin, native to the states, was an ideal fruit for carving. Designed to protect your houses during halloween!
