The sun is out and it looks like it’s sticking around (whoop)! Most of the time we get so excited to see the sun and go out and enjoy it before thinking about ways to protect our skin. Fear not, we’re here with 5 tips to protect your skin this Summer.

Always use SPF sunscreen when you go outside.

This might seem obvious, but too many of us are wearing a SPF too low. The sun is extremely strong these days, and it’s suggested you were sunscreen even on the cloudy days. Remember to reapply every 2 hours, and always after swimming or sweating. Make sure you check the sale by date too. Shelf life is usually only three years.

Avoid the sun between 10am and 2pm

This isn’t always possible. but when you can try and avoid the sun between 10am and 2pm because the sun is most intense and produces the greatest chance of sunburn. If you are outside during this time try and seek shade as much as possible by using an umbrella or tree.

Wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection.

Proper, protective sunglasses help prevent damage to the sensitive skin around your eyes, as well as cataracts. It might seem cost effective to buy the cheap trendy sunglasses you see at forever 21, but what are they really doing to protect your eyes and skin. Perform regular skin checks

Keep an eye on any changes to your skin. Note any new freckles or moles, and keep your eye on existing birthmarks, freckles or moles, and note any changes. Be sure to bring them up to the doctor if you find and notice any notable changes.

Make healthy life choices.

Your skin is your largest organ, be nice to it. Avoid smoking, smoking damages collagen and elastin in your skin. Treat your skin kindly with soothing soaps and moisturizers, that lock in moisture to your skin. Limit the amount of hot showers you take, as it strips the skin of some essential oils. Eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and plenty of water. Engage in stress-reducing activity, and get regular sleep.
